Short History of Computer Science at HMC
Creation and Development of the Computer Science Department and Major
-
20 February 1981
Mike Erlinger submits materials to be considered for hiring.
-
18 March 1981
Offer letter from HMC
-
9 April 1981
Mike Erlinger accepts position at HMC
-
1 July 1981
Michael Erlinger's start date as an Assistant Professor at HMC.
Comment:
Mike was not hired into a specific department.
The idea was that during his first year he would make recommendations
as to whether Computer Science should develop in an existing department
or a new administrative entity.
-
13 November 1984
Faculty Meeting:
The final report of the
Computer Science Steering Committee
was discussed.
-
20 April 1985
Faculty Meeting:
The faculty approved
"the amended recommendations of the Computer
Science Steering Committee".
Important items of those recommendations included:
-
The establishment of a Department of Computer Science and a Department
of Biology, the two joined as a single administrative unit.
-
A senior level appointment in Computer Science to help in the further
development of Computer Science at the college was approved.
Comment:
The appointment of a senior person in Computer Science was an
unfunded recommendation of the faculty.
-
1 December 1988
Faculty Meeting:
"Beginning with the class of 1993, students should be able to
major in Biology..."
-
15 February 1990
Faculty Meeting:
"The faculty support the introduction of a major program in
computer science under the auspices of the Computer Science
Department after the senior-level position is filled...
The Computer Science Department shall be an academically and
administratively separate unit with the same status,
responsibilities, privileges, and access to resources
as the other departments in the sciences
and mathematics."
-
28 February 1991
Faculty Meeting:
Professor Purves reported on the number of students who have declared
Biology as a major.
Comment:
Biology interpreted the December 1988 statement as indicating
when students could graduate as a Biology Major, not when students
could start majoring in Biology.
-
1 July 1991
Professor Robert Keller is hired as the senior person in Computer Science.
-
25 November 1991
The
Proposed Computer Science Major
was approved by the
FEC.
This fulfills all the requirements of the 15 February 1990
faculty
Motion on Computer Science.
-
5 December 1991
Faculty Meeting:
Professor Keller discussed the
curriculum for the proposed Computer Science major.
Comment:
I can find no specific faculty action that says:
Computer Science is NOW a major.
The faculty resolution of 15 February 1990 was slowly fulfilled,
but there does not seem to be any proclamation
announcing Computer Science as a major.
-
May 1992
First two Computer Science graduates:

-
Academic Year 1993-94

-
