Walking to the train station, I found this waterwheel on display. According to someone I met at the Konstanz conference who researches these things,this paddle design works as follows: The water is comming down in a jet. The buckets are split down the middle, so the watter sloshes out the sides, essentially making for an elastic colision and so more energy transfer.
