Exercise: Comparing modern stories with folk tales
- This would be covered in a later class after both movies had been seen and many stories had already been told in class.
- In preparation for this class, the students would read several assigned folk tales and choose one to present in class.
- After hearing the folk tales presented, we would compare and contrast them with the stories and films we had looked at in class.
- Are there elements of the stories that seem to be ubiquitous across wildly different times and social conditions? How have the elements of the story evolved over time? What sort of characters are found in each? Have they changed along with the story, or in different ways, or perhaps not at all? Have the scopes of stories changed, if so, is the modern scope broader or narrower than that in folk tales?
