In the summer of 2008, a bunch of SillyPrefrosh decided that they should all talk in a format more conducive to realtime discussion than Facebook.  This was their GoodIdea.  Their corresponding BadIdea was for this format to be AIM chat.  MartinPyne and ChrisSauro, who were busy stalking froshlings (and participated in said AIM chat) because they were bored decided to allow for a more permanent and convenient format.  Thus was born #HMC.

Officially owned by MartinPyne, #HMC can be found on irc.esper.net. [http://www.cs.hmc.edu/~mpyne/irc.html] A message usually goes onto the annual Facebook group inviting SillyPrefrosh to join and, occasionally, they actually do join.
* Whoever does this next time should link to the web client at http://hmc.reacocard.net/, since it requires no special software or configuration, and thus presents a lower barrier to entry.
