Nudity, near nudity, etc., especially of female characters in various comics, tv shows, movies or video games. Completely inappropriate except to appease the "fans."
- FanService does not have to involve nudity. It could be anything silly that only exists to throw a bone to certain fans with no real justification within the world of the work itself. For example, if StarWars III had an Acme piano randomly popping out of nowhere and crushing Jar Jar Binks, that would be FanService. Gratuitous female near-nudity is just a particular type of FanService especially common among VideoGames and Geek Culture in general.
Examples:
- SoulCalibur2?
- Minus Voldo. That's just wrong.
- Hey! Voldo is so fan service.
- Indeed. Just for a rather specific demographic.
- DeadOrAlive3? physics engine.
- DeadOrAlive? Extreme Beach Volleyball
- DeadOrAlive? series
- FinalFantasyTenTwo
- Enterprise
- Except none of the fans acknowledge its existence...
- Star Trek: Voyager
- Similar scenario to Enterprise, but to a much lesser extent, with fans who regretfully acknowledge its existence...
- TheAnimatrix: Final Flight of the Osiris
- TombRaider?. Pick one.
- Guilty Gear XX
- StarWars: Episode II
- Of course, this also falls into the same category as Enterprise...
- StarWars: Episode VI
- I don't get why these last 2 are FanService. Neither went out of its way to stick things in for fans, in fact, Episode II did anything but.
- Actually, a lot of Episode II could be argued to be quasi-FanService: Yoda fighting, the importance of Boba Fett, and a scantily-clad Natalie Portman (although her skimpiest outift was cut from the movie). Not that I'm complaining about any of this, mind you. I actually once put together a list with some fellow StarWars fans of "Things we'd like to see in a Star Wars movie but will probably never see", and Episode II had pretty much all of them except Jabba the Hutt falling down a flight of stairs.
- I haven't seen Episode II, but Episode VI had the slavegirl outfit for Leia. That was definitely fanservice.
- If I recall correctly, Episode II had Amidala getting her clothes randomly ripped off by animals until she was wearing about as much as Leia was at Jabba's. On the other hand, Episode VI was still a good movie.
- And let's not forget how cold Amidala got during her visit to Tatooine...
- All the pointless fight scenes in the Matrix sequels
- Does that make the Zion rave scenes fan-disservice?
- Does that disservice really have to be aimed at fans? I'd put it in the "what the hell were they thinking?" category myself.
