• Read something about Computer Architecture. The CACM or the SigArch (ACM special interest group on Architecture) or IEEE Micro are good places to look.
• Read something modern on OS's. The CACM or Usenix or SigOP (ACM special interest group on OS's)
• Also, on the Sun web pages are some whitepapers on semaphores, threads, etc.
• Also, #5 and #7 are historical presentations of monitors and semaphores.

Again the library or the CS library have relevant articles.
