CS125 - Networking
Project Information
Fall 2007
Introduction
Each person will work on a team project.
Teams can be as small as two people or as large as
four people.
- Project Areas
Limited to those below
- Due Date for team and project:
No later then 14 September, but if you do
TinkerNet, you need to start NOW
- Milestone Check:
16 October, 5-10 slides on status, accomplishments,
problems.
- Final Project Presentation:
28 November
Project Areas
- IPv6
We will look at some IPv6 features in lecture.
Teams need to formulate a particular project which might be focused
on either implementation or performance issues.
Investigating one or more IETF IPv6 working groups is sure to expose
a number of issues.
The CS Dept network is running IPv6, but performance and operational
issues are unknown.
- BFSNet
Sensor networks are an emerging technology.
As was recently said, "This technology is almost usable".
BFSNet is a continuing project (Lizardnet evolved to BSFNet)
on implementing a network infrastructure and sensor networks in the
BFS.
There are many known problems, but two that I am very interested in
are:
-
Cyclops - a camera for sensor networks
-
Heliomotes - a solar based sensor network node.
- TinkerNet
TinkerNet is the network set up for running the CS 125 labs.
There are two versions: one based on hardware and one based on
virtual machines. There are two pressing problems with both
approaches:
-
The code is all over the place - various disks and repositories.
Things need to be organized.
-
The working state of either version is suspect...
- Sun SPOTS
Sun SPOTS is a Java based sensor network.
I have just written a proposal to acquire two Sun
SPOTS development environments for inclusion into
BFSNet.
This environment needs to be set up and evaluated.
